Physical education
(P.E.) is a key component in school curriculums as it assists learners in
developing their cognitive and physical skills, thus enhancing their overall
academic performances. In England, PE is incorporated into the school
curriculum as it promotes students' mental and physical well-being. On the
other hand, assessment is integral to physical education as it assists teachers
in scaling the student's understanding and identification of student’s
strengths and weaknesses, and it encourages the provision of feedback to aid in
their learning process. Through addressing the statutory assessment needs of
P.E. in England, obstacles faced in enhancing assessment, and the purpose and
characteristics of high-quality formative assessment, the essay strives to
provide a comprehensive understanding of key formative assessment practices in
physical education.
