Many
people indulge in unhealthy behaviors during the adolescence stage. Substance
use greatly impacts the community, family, and victim. It could lead to social,
mental, and physical health issues. For instance, the realization that
adolescence is addicted to drugs such as marijuana could be a difficult issue
to deal with for the parent. This is because one could hide the
Pre-contemplation and contemplation stages of drug use. However, Marijuana use
among adolescents could lead to poor performance due to its side effects of
reduced coordination, inability to solve problems or think critically, poor
learning and memory, and poor interpersonal skills. In addition, addiction
could lead to schizophrenia, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), heart
attack due to increased heart rate, and difficulty breathing. However,
different procedures could be used for testing, treatment, and prevention. Some
treatment systems include detoxification, intensive care, residential care
programs, community therapies, outpatient services, and individual therapy.
Intervention procedures could entail psychosocial approaches such as
contingency management (CM), motivational enhancement therapy(MET), and
cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). However, in handling marijuana addiction among
adolescents, ethical issues could arise in decision-making. For instance, the
healthcare provider could be in a dilemma of engaging family members without
exposing the victim to victimization and misperception. Therefore, marijuana
addiction among adolescents could lead to mental, social, and physical health
issues, and some of the effective intervention procedures are CBT combined with
MET and treatment procedures such as detoxification, intensive care,
residential care programs, community therapies, outpatient services, and
medical treatment although ethical issues could arise.
