Individuals with disabilities
are disproportionately vulnerable to poverty in comparison to other demographic
groups. This might be ascribed to the substantial obstacles they encounter in
obtaining education, jobs, and healthcare. One of the significant challenges
they face in employment is wage discrimination, highlighting the popular belief
that disability impedes their opportunities to access better remuneration
compared to those without these conditions (Jolly, 2013). As such, their
challenges in the working environment significantly impact their access to
adequate income, resulting in these individuals having limited access to
quality healthcare and education, which are crucial to enhancing their skill
set. However, this situation is more dire in developing countries where people
with disability are often experiencing more economic instability in terms of
education and employment opportunities (Mitra, Posarac, & Vick, 2013). Generally,
people with disabilities face significant challenges in several facets of life
that contribute to the chronic poverty rates they face.
