details: Due Sun Sept 10 at midnight. In approx 700-800 words Draw upon the
assigned readings to provide some critical reflection upon the narratives of
conquest and the concept of "Holy War" in the book of Joshua. cover
the following points: Provide a brief account of the narrative in Joshua 6-7
and then reflect upon how it can be understood and interpreted by contemporary
readers of Scripture. Assess the historical information provided
in the excursus "The Israelite Conquest of Canaan," (pp. 307-8 in the
NISB) and the excursus, "Holy War," (p.314 in
the NISB): do you agree with these findings? Consider how the so-called "
Deuteronomic theology" (blessings for obedienceand curses for
disobedience) provides a helpful framework for understanding these narratives.
Finally, are there other spiritual or moral principles that one should apply
from these passages?
Joshua chapters 7 and 6
contain accounts of conquest that pose challenging theological and ethical
issues, notably the notion of "Holy War." The narrative in Joshua 6-7
briefly describes the modern interpretation, historical data from the New
Interpreter's Study Bible (NISB) excursus on the Israelite Conquest of Canaan
and the idea of Holy War assessed, and the Deuteronomic theology framing of
these narratives explored. The narratives of conquest and the concept of
"Holy War" in the book of Joshua reveal a complex interplay between
historical context and theological themes, demonstrating the necessity of
interpreting these passages through an understanding of the Israelite covenant,
contemporary ethical considerations, and historical accuracy.
