Restorative
justice, the power of empathy and understanding, and the role of collective memory
and commemoration entail the ideas from the course readings. The concept of
restorative justice posits that instead of solely stressing about punishment
and revenge, people should pursue addressing the damages done, rebuilding
relationships, and promoting an aspect of healing. In the Rwandan genocide
context, the restorative justice process played an instrumental role in
fostering healing and reconciliation (Hadžić, 2021). It is through transparency and reconciliation
programs and dialogues that perpetrators and survivors could get a platform to
express themselves, seek clemency, make behavioral corrections, and ultimately
contribute to the healing of affected people and communities.
