What
is the use of self in Social Work? How does your worldview (African) such as
values, beliefs, culture, ethnicity, and religion conflict with your practice
as a Social Worker in a western world and how can you navigate the conflict
using AASW principles? Go to AASW website and cite the
relevant principles or code of ethics. AASW. (2020). Australian Association of
Social Workers Code of Ethics. Aasw.asn.au. Retrieved 17 May 2022, from https://www.aasw.asn.au/document/item/1201.
In social work, the use
of self is a critical component of excellent practice. It is also necessary for
the profession's sustainability and success. Many people choose to work as
social workers because they want to help people in need and advance the cause
of the community. They are motivated to a field where they can help people,
organizations, families, and societies overcome the difficulties and obstacles
that life throws at them. However, other cultures and ideas, such as an African
worldview among social workers, have a different perspective on reality than
the westernized worldview. Therefore, the use of self and the African worldview
in regard to religious belief has created conflict in the social worker practise
and necessitates various ways using the AASW principles to navigate this
conflict.
