BMGT 2331 Individual Project (Spring 22) Read and review the key points of
chapter 22 Implementing Total Quality Management. Then find the Critical
Thinking Activities on p. 419.
Read #1 for background on the
E-Z Open Manufacturing Company (do not develop the documents).
Read #2 and answer the
question “What would you have the company do?” Read #3 and use your place of
work (or any previous place of work) to answer the question “How does (or
could) TQM benefit it in general, and in particular, what improvement would you
expect from following the 20-step implementation process?”
Finally, read #4 and use TCC as
the model – how could TQM benefit the college and students.
Include specific areas for improvement. Deliverables Individual Paper Each
student working independently will write a 3 – 5-page report that answers
questions 2, 3, and 4 from chapter 22’s Critical Thinking
Total quality management (TQM)
entails detecting and mitigating possible production errors, enhancing supply
chain management, and focusing on agility and employee development to ensure
quality products and services. However, the focus on traditional ways of
operating business could hinder success due to focus on short-term goals, the
arrogance of organizations, underestimation of the employees' capabilities,
equation of higher cost too high quality, and application of
"bossmanship" and not leadership. Implementing TQM requires top
management commitment and commitment of the necessary resources. The
implementation process required a precise analysis of the organization's
objectives, vision, available resources, and ultimate goal. In addition, the
organization's infrastructure should support consistency in quality
improvement. Also, the leaders should be role models, trustworthy, courageous,
and focused on creating an atmosphere of quality improvement and teamwork
throughout the organization. However, there are twenty steps in the
implementation process and each organization is different and hence requires
different implementation plans.
The Total quality management
(TQM) implementation process entails preparation, planning, and execution
phases. First, the preparation phase involves the top management's commitment
of resources and time and selecting a steering committee to monitor the process.
The third step is forming a team by the selected committee to enhance cohesion
before beginning the total quality initiative (Goetsch and Davis). The committee should also be
trained to highlight the various principles guiding the team and the organization's
vision. Next, establishing objectives then publicizes and communicates the TQM
implementation process to the entire organization and the key stakeholders.
Also, during the preparation process, the management should identify its
strengths and weaknesses, establish means of dealing with resistance to change,
and enhance employee satisfaction and customer satisfaction (Goetsch and Davis). In the second
phase, the planning stage, the organization should determine the approach, the
projects, team composition, and training programs. Lastly, in the execution
phase, the various teams are given directives to begin taking action; the team
provides feed black to the committee regarding employee satisfaction, customer
satisfaction, and the necessary infrastructure modification to enhance the
process. However, it could be crucial for the organization to reach out to a
consultant to assist in the implementation process (Goetsch and Davis). Therefore, TQM enhances an
organization's performance if the preparation, planning, and execution phases
are appropriately implemented.
The E-Z Open Manufacturing
company is in the preparation phase of the TQM. First, the steering committee
should present a draft of the organization's goals, guiding principles, and
vision to help establish the strategic objectives to enhance the process (Goetsch and Davis). In this case,
the company should drop its traditional strategies for carrying out the
business and instead establish a long-term focus, embrace agile production,
empower employees, create an environment of producing quality services and products
at an affordable cost, and utilize leadership strategies that mitigate
"bossmanship"(Goetsch
and Davis). In addition, for the
organization to succeed, it must be willing to commit resources and enhance the
coordination between the management and employees. Therefore, the E-Z open
manufacturing company could succeed in the TQM implementation if the
preparation process is carried out appropriately by clearly stating the vision,
objectives, and principles together with the commitment of resources and
management.
However, if the organization
implements the 20 steps appropriately, it could accrue many benefits that
enhance its performance. For example, the process will ensure fewer errors in
products and services, reducing product recall rate and enhancing customer
loyalty. It will also lead to customer satisfaction as they acquire quality
products and services, increasing the profit margin and market share (Goetsch and Davis). Also, proper
TQM implementation clearly defines the organization's cultural values as the core
values central to continuous improvement and management of quality. In
addition, when defects are less, the company saves on the cost of fixing
products, replacements of defective products, and customer support hence a
higher profit margin (Goetsch and
Davis). Therefore, TQM could offer enhanced customer satisfaction, lower
cost, high-profit margins, and fewer defects.
However, if the TTC model is
combined with the TQM implementation, it could offer more benefits. For
instance, the TTC model focuses on enhancing confidence and social trust, which
is critical in enhancing the success of the TQM process. In addition, TQM could
help students improve their performance by setting clear academic goals,
guiding principles, and focusing on improvement (Goetsch and Davis). Therefore, TQM implementation is
beneficial in different areas and could help improve student performance when
combined with the implementation of the TTC model.
TQM enhances an organization's
performance if the preparation, planning, and execution phases are
appropriately implemented. However, each organization is different and hence
requires different implementation plans. For instance, the E-Z open manufacturing
company could succeed in the TQM implementation if the preparation process is
carried out appropriately by clearly staying the vision, objectives, and
principles together with the commitment of resources and management. As a
result, TQM could offer enhanced customer satisfaction, lower cost, high-profit
margins, and fewer defects. However, TQM implementation is beneficial in
different areas and could help improve student performance when combined with
the implementation of the TTC model.
