1.Research shows that scores
on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale tend to be significantly higher among
European-Canadian participants than among Japanese participants. How does a
social psychologist explain this result? (200 words)The
meaning of the word identity has never existed in Japanese. The concept of
understanding an individual's identity has not been encouraged. This is because
the Japanese encourage the presence of a uniform culture. They encourage
interdependence among each other and collective behavior. The lack of diverse
identity options contributes to the low self-esteem among the Japanese. On the
other hand, European-Canadian participants are exposed to different identity
options. As a result, they tend to understand themselves, thus promoting their self-esteem.
Race and ethnicity promote identity diversification. However, most Asian
nations have limited race and ethnic diversity. Consequently, this means that
identity diversification is minimal. Therefore, the Japanese experience less
exposure to identity diversity. On the other hand, the European-Canadian
participants have experienced a wide variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds.
Due to this, they have extensive identity options. As a result of these
differences, the Japanese tend to experience less self-esteem compared to their
European-Canadian counterparts.
