To be most useful in a community, it is essential for mental health workers to know how to assess a community for needs in order to meet those needs through the development of an effective prevention program. In order to learn the components of an effective community prevention program and how to develop one, complete the portions of this assignment according to the instructions below:

Access and read the “Mock Community Case Study” document. After you read the case study, perform a community needs assessment for the mock community by answering the following prompts:

Topic 3: Mock Community Needs Assessment

List the social issues the community is dealing with. What is the target population and the demographics characteristics of this population (racial/ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic status, age of residents, etc.)?

 

Describe the risk and protective factors that contribute to the social issues. (50-75 words)

 

What are the unique characteristics of the community? Describe the social capital in the community. If there isn’t one, provide ways that a social network could be developed. 

 

Describe resources available in the community for this target population (schools, faith-based, health & human services, etc.). Are they easily accessible?  Explain if there is a resource gap or not. If so, how will this gap be filled? (75-100 words)

 

Community Readiness:

Explain if the community recognizes the social issues (Alcohol, tobacco, other drug use, etc.) (75-100 words)

 

Describe the existing vision or plan for prevention. Who supports the vision for prevention? (75-100 words)

 

Analyze the existing community Youth Prevention Program in the mock community:

What is the mission/vision statement of the Youth Program?

 

Describe the social issues the program addresses. (40-50 words)

 

Explain the management of this program. Are the personnel qualified? Why or why not? (75-100 words)

 

Describe the evaluation strategy of the Youth Program. What, if any, data collection methods are used to assess outcomes? (50-75 words)

 

Describe the structure of the program. What activities are there for attendees? Are these activities effective? Explain your answer. (75-100 words)

 

Lastly, select one social issue this mock community is dealing with. Next, propose a possible community prevention program structure for this social issue that will meet the needs of the community. (200-300 words)
