Goal Understanding in Infants

D‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍esign an experiment to test the hypothesis: “Reaching experience affects the development of goal understanding in infants”. Using the four points below as subheadings.

• Background and justification :In your answer you should briefly summarise relevant background and use it to justify your design.

• Method:Give an outline‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍ of your method and explain why you chose that method. • Data analysis :Explain how you would analyse the data and what pattern of data would be consistent with or refute your hypothesis.

•Strength and weaknesses :describe one strength and one weakness of your design. 0% plagurism (no plagurism in your own words) 1 refe‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍rence is fine

Expert Solution

Background and justification;Infants' reaching experience has the potential to influence their goal orientation and understanding. However, infant reaching experience is not automatic and develops as cognitive skills develop. Infants typically exhibit sensitivity to the causes, costs, and goals of intentional action when they commence reaching for and picking up objects, which occurs at approximately 4 to 5 months, and manipulating them, which occurs at approximately 6 to 8 months (Liu, Brooks & Spelke, 2019). Therefore, as infants advance in age, they develop reaching capabilities that are associated with goal understanding. At six months, they tend to attribute goals to purposeful actions, as opposed to those that are accidental, and can distinguish between acts of reaching performed by an agent and similar movements executed by an inanimate object, perceiving the former as goal-directed (Liu, Brooks & Spelke, 2019). Therefore, based on this, we hypothesize that reaching experience affects the development of goal understanding in infants.
