After conditioning when the unconditioned stimulus
is not paired with the conditioned stimulus extinction happens. Extinction can occur in two ways: in psychology, it
can occur when the behaviour of a conditioned event begins fading away
(Michael, 2017). For example, in the case of alcoholism, after the alcoholic
begins associating soberness with support and love, he is motivated to remain
sober; however, when the people around him withdraw their support and love, the
alcoholic is no longer motivated to remain sober and as such, will relapse back
into addiction. In this scenario, this relapse back into his original behaviour
is called extinction.
