Discussion Prompt: Job Descriptions
and Recruiting
The
ability of organizations to respond to customers and new markets quickly and
efficiently is greater now than ever before. Workforce planning plays a vital
role in sustaining this ability, since effectively determining job design and
staffing can make or break an organization's success.
Organizing job tasks and revising job
descriptions is something that needs to be an ongoing activity for
organizations. Jobs are fluid, and documenting change is important. However,
writing an effective job description requires understanding the job analysis
process.
Find a job analysis form and discuss with your classmates how the details of this document capture job duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills, and abilities. In your initial post, include answers to the following questions: 1.What role does the job analysis play in writing job descriptions and in recruiting top talent? Be specific. 2.What are some best practices for using or writing a job description to recruit top talent into an organization? In your initial post, incorporate at least one outside source in addition to your textbook. Please be sure to properly format your in-text citations according to standard APA guidelines. Biblical
perspective
Jesus
conducted the human resource functions of workforce planning, recruitment, and
selection. He planned his workforce from the very beginning.
“‘Before I
formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart’” (Holy Bible, New International Version,
Jeremiah 1:5).
He carefully recruited and selected his people. This was shown in how he selected each of the 12 disciples.“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit” (Holy Bible, New International Version, John 15:16).
As presented
by Leman and Pentak (2004), God knows the SHAPE of his sheep and calls us to
use our strengths, heart, attitude, and personality for the glory of God. He
plans for us the experiences we encounter in order to do the work of the Lord.
God created each of us with talents and gifts, and he expects us to share those talents and gifts for the good of our families, the organizations for which we work, and society at large. In managing human resources, we are tasked with helping others to use their talents and gifts for good. Recruitment and selection—compared by Leman & Pentak (2004) to a shepherd choosing his sheep—is where that process begins.
Enhancing organizational
success and fostering a feeling of purpose are achieved by incorporating
biblical ideas into job analyses, job descriptions, and recruiting, the
application of SHAPES (Strengths, Heart, Attitude, Personality) in job matching
and recruitment best practices, as well as verses like Jeremiah 1:5 and John
15:16, support this.
